Click here to begin the Lesson

Description:

Students will map out a timeline of Toledo Fire History using the interactive timeline at the Called to Duty website, information gathered from the Called to Duty video and Internet information from the Toledo Fire Museum online. Students will learn about connection between U.S. and world history and their own local history.

Materials:
  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Called to Duty video
  • LCD projector (if possible)
  • Paper for their timeline and colored pencils
The following websites:
Timeline activity:
  1. View the Evolution of Time, Evolution of Machine and Evolution of Society segments on the Called to Duty video or DVD. Found on the video at the following time intervals:
    • 10:40-12:10(Time)
    • 15:45-17:50(Machine)
    • 18:10-25:30 (Society)
Then visit The Toledo Fire Museum to find more information on Toledo Fire Department history.

  2. As a class, visit the Timeline in Educator's Resources at http://www.calledtoduty.com. (If you are able, connect your computer to a projector for whole class viewing.)

  3. Discuss the dates or "stops" on the timeline. What happened in Toledo Fire History each of those years?

  4. Note: "There are nine "stops" on the History of the Toledo Fire Department timeline" Ask: "Can you add some more?"

  5. Divide students into small groups. Their mission is to add dates and events to create a more complete timeline. Have students recall the video and make a list of important events and dates from the show that they remember. Have students visit http://www.toledofiremuseum.com to gather more information and check dates.

  6. After the brainstorming and fact-finding session, as a class, list on the board the dates and events the groups discovered.

  7. Have each member of the class create a new timeline using the dates on the Called to Duty website and their new dates and events. Make sure to combine world and U.S. history events with the TFD events whenever possible.
Some suggestions:
  • What year were horses retired from the fire department?
  • What year were women admitted as members of the TFD?
  • When were "steamers" acquired by the TFD to fight fires?
  • When did the first Toledo Fire Museum open? Where was it?
  • How did new inventions change the way fires were fought and how the TFD responded to them?
Find these dates to add to the timeline:
  • Invention of the electric light?
  • Invention of the telephone?
  • Invention of the automobile?
  • Invention of television?
  • Invention of the computer?
