A Day in the Life of a Real Super Hero
This lesson, for grades 1-4, features the Reading Rainbow episode, Max, and the corresponding book
by Bob Graham.

- Tell students you are going to watch a video clip about heroes.
Watch the last segment of the Called to Duty program found on the video from 55:35-57:55 with your students.
Now watch the Reading Rainbow episode, MAX. This episode follows Max, the son of superhero parents whose soaring
abilities are brought to life when an emergency arises...
- Ask students why firefighters are considered heroes.
- Ask students about cartoon heroes or live-action heroes they watch on television or at the movies.
- What makes these cartoon characters heroes?
- What makes real people heroes?
- Come up with some hero vocabulary words like courage, bravery, dedication and discuss their meanings.
- Ask students, can a doctor be a hero?
- How about a teacher?
- A chef?
- Talk about a typical day in the life of a firefighter.
- What does a firefighter on duty do during his/her shift?
- Make a list on the chalkboard of their answers. Then write these answers in individual squares like a comic book.
- Read Max aloud to the class. Then read and show students an actual comic book or comic strip.
- Showing video clips from old animated superhero shows like The Hulk, The Fantastic Four or Spiderman can be fun. Visit Cartoon Network for video clips.
- Have students draw and write their own comic strip superhero based on a real person in their town.
- The idea is to show these people as heroes. They can create names such as: The Adventures of FlameFighter Man, SuperTeacher, etc.
- Cartoons should be four panels in length and include text (according to your students reading/writing level).
- Compile the strips into a classroom comic book entitled Real-Life Super Heroes.
Additional activities:
Use this same activity to explore biographies of famous people. Have students create short comic
strips using Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks or Jackie Robinson as their subjects.
